After establishing that life operates only in water — and that life on land simply encapsulated that water — the next question followed immediately: where exactly is life located? Where do the four hallmarks actually operate?

The answer required two proofs.

An ECMO machine completely replaces your heart and lungs. You remain alive. Why? Because life happens in the cell — not in the organ.

Cyanide doesn't stop your heart or lungs. But you die anyway. Why? Because it blocks cellular respiration — the process at the cellular level that keeps life operating.

Life is cellular. Not organismal. The organism is infrastructure for life — which operates exclusively inside cells.

This raised the next question: what about viruses? They don't metabolize. They don't maintain homeostasis. But they behave as if they're alive.

Maybe if we stop counting molecules and start observing what life actually does, we can understand the logic life follows.
